HAT́HA YOGA DANGEROUS FOR HUMAN ELEVATION{purely Original Discourse}

SHRII SHRII ÁNANDAMÚRTI

13 September 1978, Patna, INDIA

As you know the “Curry”, even if it is prepared with maximum care, can not be treated as a palatable dish if there is want of salt in it.

Similarly, all human endeavors to find out a link between finite and Infinite fail, if there is want of Devotion in it.

Take the case of karma. An aspirant is a Karma Yogii, but all his karmas are sure to fail; if there is want of Devotion.

Karma is glorified only when it remains associated with Devotion, that is Love, Love for the Supreme.

Otherwise, Karma becomes a mechanical one, and the little bit of Introvertiality that it possesses in the rudimental phase disappears after a short while, and the movement becomes purely extroversial one.

That is, the very Human Existence becomes a machine.

So one can not achieve the Supreme Goal by dint of one’s karma, when the said karma is not associated with Devotion or Love, Love for the Supreme.

And now let us see if one is engaged in Tapasyá́.

Tapasyá” means undergoing hardship knowingly, willingly undergoing hardship inorder to reach the Goal within a short while.

Now while doing this “Tapasyá” if there is no Love for the Great?

What does happen?

It is nothing but misuse of time.

Tapasyá́ without Love is misuse of time, Tapasyá without Devotion, what?

It will have adverse effect on the physical body and also on the psychic body because the result is definitely bad.

Then suppose, He is a Great Yogi, but there is no Love for the Lord, for the Lord.

Yogashcittavrttinirodhah”.

What is Yoga?

Yoga is suspension of all psychic propensities, suspension of all psychic propensities, is called Yoga.

Now if these suspension, during these suspension, this period of suspension, there is Love for God, then all those suspended propensities rest on the Supreme Entity for whom there is Love.

But, if there is no Love, then those suspended propensities are finally converted into crude matter, that is, the Subtle Human Existence becomes what?

It becomes like iron, it becomes like wood, it becomes like sand.

What a deterioration! What a downfall!

Such a type of Yogiis, having no Love for the Supreme Entity, this particular nature of Yoga is called “Hat́ha yoga” in Saḿskrta.

It is dangerous for the human elevation.

Suppose, he has got no Devotion or Love for the Supreme, but he is a Jiṋánii, he knows much, and others say, recognizes the fact that, he is a very great Jiṋánii, he knows these, and he knows that, but Jiṋána without Paramátmá, is skin of, is like skin of a banana, you know skin of banana, it is not banana but it is skin of banana.

One may get, one will get no taste from it, his knowledge is not Parávidyá, his knowledge is Aparávidyá.

That is knowledge pertaining to crude materialism.

This type of crude materialism – knowledge concerned with crude materialism has done much harm to human society during last one Century.

It misguided much the entire Human Society, it has made human beings; converted human beings into animals, and animals have been exploited by the propounders of those crude Philosophies.

It has been said that, these knowledges are just like a big, a very big ocean; all knowledges “Pará” or “Apará”, they are just like, a big Ocean.

Now, after churning ocean, after churning milk, you get, what?

You get butter and buttermilk.

After churning this type of ocean the butter portion has been enjoyed by the Devotees and the buttermilk portion those Jiṋániis, they fight amongst themselves regarding the ownership of that buttermilk portion.

And finally that buttermilk portion doesn’t come to their possession or rather enjoyed by them, because before they come to a decision who is to enjoy that buttermilk, that buttermilk gets deteriorated, rotten.

You see, there are is a type of Bhakti known as “Vidhi Bhakti”, Bhakti, Devotion as per rules.

Now there are several categories of Bhakti.

Amongst them the main three types are what?

Támasikii/Támasii, Rájasii and Sáttvikii –

Támasii Bhakti, that is static Devotion, here it is not actually Bhakti because the inner desire is that my enemy should to be destroyed, his enemies may or may not destroyed, but because the Parama Puruśa was not the goal, that’s why it is sure that he won’t get Parama Puruśa, because HE was not his goal.

And Rájasii Bhakti that is mutative devotion, is that Bhakti, where one wants one’s own physical prosperity. So has a result of this Bhakti one may or may not gain the prosperity, but it is sure that he won’t get Parama Puruśa, because Parama Puruśa was not his goal.

In Sáttvikii Bhakti, that is sentient Devotion, the Goal was Parama Puruśa.

Sádhakas should aspire for HIM and HIM alone, and this is the Supreme Goal of all human endeavours.
